AtrophIA Releases “Emergence” + Interview

Recently I had the chance to talk to Ian Hiscock, a by-day PR manager for V2 Presents, but in the evenings, he’s known as AtrophIA. We have the opportunity to premier his newest track, Emergence, and talk a little bit about his musical background. Here is the interview transcription below.

RMR: What made you want to get into the music industry at first? And what is keeping you going in the music industry?
I: Making my life revolve around music was a dream of mine pretty much as far back as I can remember. I’ve always been passionate and involved in just about every musical style there is from EDM & electronic to post-hardcore & alternative, to reggae, jazz, and classical.
Since the minute I was old enough to seek out and discover music, I’ve been obsessed with everything about it. What keeps me going, is the desire for both my personal and work life to be filled with music.
RMR: Working for V2 Presents or your music production/djing/etc, what came first?

I: Playing & performing music came long before I knew anything about DJ’ing, or had a clue what I wanted to do as a career.
I started recording and producing music in 2006. Before that, I played Cello, Bass Guitar, regular Guitar, a bit of drums, and took piano lessons for several years. Playing Piano is what ultimately inspired and enabled me to start writing my own music.
Right before I moved to Salt Lake City in 2010, I had been dabbling with DJing. I went to my first V2 show the same year, which sparked my love for electronic and dance music. That in turn, drove my passion to make the music industry my career and make DJ’ing a much bigger part of my life.

RMR: Do you notice any rookie mistakes that you see artists doing that eventually become detrimental to their career?

I: That is a good question hahaha. Being hateful and/or prejudice will get you nowhere as an artist. I’ve seen reputations plummet because of narrow-minded and ignorant things said on social media, as they should. There’s no room for assholes in the scene.

On the flip side: I think that being positive, working hard, supporting your peers, and being a good person are the keys to success artistically and professionally.

RMR: To end your day or to give yourself some relaxing time, tell us some of your hobbies.

I: Besides producing and performing music, I love the outdoors, video games, reading, and plants.
Nature has always been a huge inspiration to me artistically, and being outside hiking fuels my passion. Lately, I’ve been playing Fortnite, Destiny 2, and Horizon Zero Dawn on PS4. I just finished reading Stephen’s King’s “The Shining”, and I love buying new plants for my house.

RMR: In your own opinion, where is the music industry going? How do you balance the music industry life with other obligations you may have?

I: The music industry is thriving and will continue to thrive! I’m excited to see the evolution of festivals & events with new technology like VR and new social media developments that are used by artists & promoters.
I think DJs will continue to implement more live aspects into their performances & that innovative, unique styles will gain more notoriety over recycled and reused sounds.

Regarding life balance, time management and efficiency go a long way. I work hard every day and I love the work that I do! On my free nights and off-weekends, I chill with my friends and girlfriend. I’m all for keeping a balanced lifestyle.

RMR: Tell us about your new track!

I: As always, I wanted to make something different. I like to include traditional piano as a major component of most of my songs, and this winter especially had me on a dark and mysterious vibe. I tried to create the perfect mix of melodic, dark, and futuristic.

RMR: Anything else you’d like to talk about or say?

I: Shoutout to V2 Presents and a plug to Get Lucky, coming up on March 9th & 10th, as well as Das Energi 2018 on August 17th & 18th here in Salt Lake City!
