A Hall of Fame emcee has raised his jersey into the rafters. Hip-hop legend, Prodigy of Mobb Deep, just passed away at 42 years old.
P held a career that lasted over a decade with classic hits, prison stints, and paradigm shifts. P’s career lasted despite CD’s giving way to through piracy and Napster to digital titans taking over like iTunes and Spotify, Prodigy has etched his mark on hip-hop’s slang, dress, and sound.
Growing up, I listened to Mobb Deep’s The Infamous and Hell on Earth every day in my car. His work with Alchemist fueled my early interest in samples and music production. I believe a lot of the early Mobb Deep production really inspired current day music within the genre.
In the times of dirty drums and the crunchy samples of the 9os, Havoc and Alchemist were masters of the art. P flowed over both of their productions with an incredible ease. Moving throughout hip-hop history working with other legends like Nas, Cormega, Kool G Rap, and 50 Cent. The duo also put rappers from their circle on the map with Big Noyd and The Infamous Mobb.
I wanted to create a playlist that showcased the Queens-bridge legend’s best hits, stretched across his career. The playlist had to start with my favorite P record of all time.
