On April 28th & 29th, excited students and guests gathered in downtown Seattle at Cornish College of the Arts to see the first hologram-based art exhibition.
Thanks to Microsoft and Cornish’s design staff, a select group of this year’s graduating class were able to create and demonstrate their senior projects utilizing Microsoft’s mixed-reality headset: Hololens.
Over the course of the two day exhibition, part of Microsoft’s HoloLens team worked alongside these students from every department, dance, design, theater, etc., to showcase the student’s creations. Guests put on HoloLens, and were able to see a variety of 3D holographic animations, motion designs, and video captures created with the help of the HoloLens headset.
My favorite exhibit was created by Bobby Rice, a senior fashion design student, entrepreneur, and bboy dancer. He created a clothing brand called ‘SCUFF’ that focuses on addressing issues in current fashion for dancers. The company’s goal is to create comfortable and stylish clothing specifically for dancers that is extra durable, flexible, and breathable.
His exhibit featured a poster on the wall along with a table, a ‘SCUFF’ sticker, attractive looking orange business cards, and his company’s look-book. When wearing the HoloLens you could still see all of this in the real world AND you were able to see a 3D holographic-animation of Bobby dancing in the ‘SCUFF’ pants he designed.
The hologram figure of Bobby was placed on top of his sticker and did not move from this spot no matter where you stood, basically like a platform. Utilizing mixed-reality this way really showcased some quality details on his pants and shoes. Users could see functionality & fashion at the same exact time and from any angle they wanted.
Seeing his product on a moving body immediately answered my initial question of whether or not they would fit similarly on my body and I definitely would’ve purchased a pair on the spot. Now that I’ve seen a glimpse of the potential case uses for art, fashion, theater, and design on Hololens, I’m really excited to see what other students around the Northwest are creating.
