Drake is now joining a number of other artists who have stated either verbally or through action that they’ll put money to their ear no matter what Jay Z thinks.

Jay Z recently released his album 4:44 and he didn’t shy away from taking aim at more than a few rappers. On his second track of the album “The Story of O.J.” he raps

“Y’all on the ‘gram holdin’ money to your ear, there’s a disconnect, we don’t call that money over here.”

So Jay Z is saying the money phone is corny, we don’t do that.  And Jay Z has a reputation of this. We all remember “D.O.A.” (Death of Autotune) where he obviously spoke out against the heavy use of autotune being used in hip-hop during that time. And usually, when Jay says something, the culture listens.

But a number of other artists have been on record to say, hey, the money phone may not be cool for you because you got a billion dollars, but it’s still cultural and cool for us to do. Boosie has been on record to say he’ll still do it, as well as 21 Savage, Future and now Drake. Of course, Future’s decision to act out against the lyrics is most likely a response to the clear jab taken at him on track no.1 of 4:44, “Kill Jay Z”

“I don’t even know what you woulda done, in the Future other niggas playing football with your son.”

This shows that things are still not all the way good between Drake & Jay Z. Both have been on record taking petty jabs at one another, but there does appear to be a mutual level of respect between the two.

Lyrics from “Fear” by Drake

From the looks of it, Drake is saying Jay is not the end all be all of rap. You aren’t the godfather-gatekeeper you think you are and everything doesn’t start and end with you – you don’t dictate anything I or the culture does.

Who do you side with? Is Jay Z right about holding money to your ear being corny or is he too old and out of touch with today’s hip-hop youth and culture to understand why artists like Drake continue to hold stacks to their ear? Definitely get in the comments and let us know.
