Drake Releases New Single And Video "Nice For What"

Drake Drops New Song + Visual “Nice For What”

After releasing the two wildly successful tracks “God’s Plan” and “Diplomatic Immunity” in 2018, Drake is back with a new song and accompanying music video titled “Nice For What”. In addition from dropping this new single, Drake has also announced that he is finishing his newest full-length album. While it is still unclear how “Nice For What” and the other two tracks we’ve heard in 2018 will fit into the new project (if at all), seeing consistent releases back-to-back indicates the album release date is in the near future.

Produced by Allen Ritter and Murda Beatz, “Nice For What” carries a smooth, catchy flow, sampling the vocals of Lauryn Hill’s 1998 single “Ex-Factor”. The production masterfully pairs the natural strength of Hill’s voice with hard-hitting kicks and snares. Rapping over a punchy percussion line, Drake continues with the same style of flow that he demonstrated on his previous 2018 tracks – his delivery is rhythmically tight, delivered with such ease that it seems laid-back at times, complimenting the smooth, classic R&B-style vocal samples from Lauryn Hill. The resulting track is dangerously catchy, and poised to be a perfect spring/summer anthem.

The lyrical content of “Nice for What” is focused on a girl who is working long hours to advance her position in life, while trying to find time to flex online like her friends (“Work at 8am, finish around five/Hoes talk down, you don’t see them outside”). Drake raps about how, despite the girl’s desire to keep up with social media (“With your phone out, gotta hit them angles”), he knows that she’s full of ambition and energy in her  offline life (That’s a real one, in your reflection/Without a follow, without a mention”). His message carries notes of positivity and praise for ambitious, hardworking girls, while also nodding to the fact that social media isn’t always a bad thing when you’re having fun.

Check out the music video for “Nice For What” that includes appearances by Olivia Wilde, Issa Rae, Rashida Jones, Jourdan Dunn, Tiffany Haddish, Yara Shahidi, Letitia Wright, Emma Roberts and more.
