RMR‘s Emilie Brandt Interview

Respect My Region: Are you currently living in Denver?

Emilie Brandt: Yeah I like it a lot. I grew up in Milwaukee and lived in Madison, Wisconsin for a bit, but then moved to Boulder Colorado then to Denver.

RMR: How is the Denver scene nowadays? Is it where you would like it to be?

EB: Umm, it’s hard to say. It varies between genres. I know the EDM scene is really cool here. I got invited to Nick’s (Illenium) show and it was like this full area and it was insane. My song came on and everyone knew it and it was so crazy to see everyone know the words. This city is super welcoming and not many people are from here, but they all move here and I meet people from all over, New York, the Midwest, all over.

RMR: How are things going since you dropped your singles “Like I Never Did” and “Found The Feeling?” Are you seeing some of the results you would’ve hoped?

EB: They haven’t been out for too long, but everyone’s feedback is super positive and the feedback is good. People seem to be enjoying it so I’m excited.

RMR: How did you first get into music?

EB: It’s been quite the evolution. I first picked up my stepdad’s acoustic guitar when I was a kid. I would pick it up before he would get home from work because I wasn’t supposed to play with it. Back then it was around the time Taylor Swift came out and was super country. There was a point I told my mom and stepdad that I’ve been playing the guitar and that I had a song to play for them. Soon after that, they bought me my first guitar. Also, my friend and I were playing outside a Starbucks and they enjoyed what we were doing so much that they asked us if we would come back and play in a few weeks. So then from there we started playing at coffee shops.

RMR: Could you tell us what we could expect from the upcoming album?

EB: Expect a lot of feelings. Every song is really different. And every song is a different feeling. I went through a lot of relationship and life things in the last few years. Anyone that is older than me can vouch, that from 20-24 years old there are tons of changes.

RMR: What goes into your musical recording process and how long did it take to record the album from start to finish?

EB: The writing process and the recording process is super fast. The writing process is my favorite part. It goes by super fast. My team crushes it. It’s more like everything else that goes into it. The mixing and mastering of the album. It’s been two or three years since I started. I mean I work a job just to afford all the things that I want. So I’ve got a full-time time job, but also work music full time. I worked a double yesterday and had a show the night before.

RMR: What has been a huge highlight for you and your career so far?

EB: I definitely think that working with Nick Miller of Illeneium and being on his sophomore album was awesome. Working with him has opened a ton of doors for me. Another crazy thing, I was at this open mic the other night and my friend told me that Steve Aoki was in the building. I didn’t believe it and it turns out that he was, so they said I had to go meet him so I went up and chatted with him for like 10 minutes. He was super cool and super humble.

RMR: If you could work with any artist in the world, who would it be?

EB: My biggest inspiration and influence is Florence Welch (Florence + The Machine.) She isn’t in the edm scene, but she’s a beautiful person. I would love to co-write a song for her. She has a book coming out and I’m such a big fan, I can’t wait to get it!

RMR: What do you have planned for this summer?

EB: No shows are confirmed, but we have a few more collabs in the future. We will play a few shows in the next few months. Hopefully from coast to coast, I’ve never been to New York so hopefully, we can play there. I’m not much of a city person but its a powerful city and especially for the industry that I’m in so we’ll see.
