No…Could it be? Could it really be? Did Kendrick Lamar use a reference track? The internet was sent into a craze earlier today as stories surfaced that TDE artist Kendrick Lamar may have used a reference track for his hit record “DNA.” off his already gold, soon to turn platinum album DAMN. The DNA reference track in question has some merit, but we don’t know what to think just yet.
If this is true…It really wouldn’t surprise me. Not because I think Kendrick would go search Soundcloud or YouTube and then deliberately take someone else’s flow and idea – but, that’s not the only way for a reference to reach him. Do you know how many people are in these top tier artists camp? The answer is lots. Surely Kendrick listens to the opinions of his label mates, right? ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Jay Rock? And I’m not saying one of these guys went and searched the net and stole the flow either, but it is possible. There’s definitely a certain level of trickle down that can easily go unseen.
Funk Flex says Drake’s legacy forever is tarnished and he can never be considered the king of rap because it was revealed he used reference tracks. But we all know how Drake and Flex feel about one another. If it is found out that Kendrick used a reference track, would this tarnish his legacy? Could Kendrick still be considered as one of the greatest ever?
