A Newbie’s Guide to Seattle

Like most internet addicts from my generation, I first stumbled across Respect My Region on the interwebs. The brand got my attention because it wasn’t like anything I had seen or been around during my short year and half of living in Seattle.

As a bass music junkie and ex-top 40 promoter, life outside of electronic music seemed like a water amusement park without the water. So now, I get to take you guys with me as I start breaking out of this music bubble I’ve been in and explore what the PNW has to offer.

Here’s what I’ve learned about Seattle so far:

  1. If you’re ever in Seattle past midnight you have to get a ‘Seattle dog’. You will never truly understand how much grilled onions and cream cheese are destined to be on a hot dog until you have one.
  2. The sunsets here are unreal no matter where you are in the state. You don’t even need to see the sun, just look for the all of the sky’s watercolors!
  3. Mountains are the glitter of land forms in Washington. Not only are they all over the state, they are gorgeous. If you need a change in perspective just go on one of the many hiking trails the state has to offer.
  4. After spending most of my time in Boise, Idaho, I was first introduced to the word “hella”. People from Seattle will argue until they are blue in the face that hella started here and not California. Regardless of my opinions on the word, hella is hella appropriate at all times.
  5. Don’t even get me started on the drivers here. I’m pretty sure you’d be better off not driving at all then dealing with these people. They like to ride their brakes more than they like to see the Seahawks win.
  6. ’12’ is more than just a number and it can be overwhelming. Even though most Seahawks fans nowadays are on the bandwagon, the one thing they don’t lack is spirit. You’ll see the number 12 almost as much as you’ll see blue and green.
  7. Recycling is a BIG deal here and we aren’t talking just recycling plastic. People here wash their ziploc bags, do compost, and they even charge you for plastic bags in some cities. If you’re not green then you’re definitely not going to fit in in the Evergreen state.
