Planet Of The Drums: The Group You’ve Never Heard Of, With People You Already Know

Recently I was looking at music festival lineups and concerts this summer, seeing which ones should be covered by Respect My Region, and I came across a name I haven’t seen in a long time, Planet of The Drums. People new to the music scene probably have never heard of them as a group. However, the newbies have definitely heard some of their solo music. I’m going to give a rundown on their legacy, the two artists mainstream and new listeners might know because of their solo music, and where to expect them as they run the summer festival circuit.

The Origins of Planet of The Drums

For sci-fi flick watchers and old school electronic music listeners, the origin of the name seems quite obvious. Planet of The Drums combines the name of the film “Planet Of The Apes” and the genre Drum and Bass, as their music is of that genre.

The origins of their formation came from their mutual realization that they kept playing at the same places, at the same time, and they’re wanting to step away from the side rooms to the main stages. At that time they were the biggest draw for drum and bass crowds, but they were only hitting small clubs/venues. To change that the three DJs formed POTD alongside an MC and began to tour as a festival-level group.

The Big Names Everyone Knows, Even Newer Listeners

The legacy for POTD lives on, but new listeners might not know about it. However, they know at least two of their members. Messinian, and Dieselboy.

If you’ve been listening to dubstep since 2015 it’s guaranteed that you know who Messinian is. You’ve heard him at every Excision show you’ve been to. He’s become one of the most frequent collaborators that Excision has worked with. The first few songs with him came out in 2011 with “X-Rated” and “Heavy Artillery.” Now his voice is heard at every Excision show and festival.

Dieselboy stuck to his drum and bass roots while going on his solo tours, frequenting the festival circuits and big nightclubs alone. Alongside his record label, Human Imprint, that’s how he’s stayed in the spotlight and is as popular as he is right now. He expanded his genre to dubstep, collaborating with artists such as Downlink, Mayhem, & Bare.
