Ryan Summers Brings Us Ambient Vibes with His New Album “ii”

Ryan Summers‘ most recent album, “ii” has been described as something straight out of the TV show Black Mirror. Minimalist, eerie, and oddly functional, this collection is one that you can lose yourself in for a long time.

With this fluid mix of ambient, drone, and electronica, Summers manages to create a hypnotic, movie-score-like album. Listening, I’m reminded of artists like Loscil, Steve Hauschildt, and Aphex Twin.

Although Summers has dabbled in rock, folk, trance, and other genres in the past, for me, this most recent project has been far more interesting. This album, composed with software synthesizers put through a large metal plate that Ryan had custom-built, reflects an oddness that Summers observes in our digital age of expansive technology.

“A pensive collection of songs, largely inspired by what was coming through my social feeds at the time. I think I was picking up on this anxiety stemming from authoritarian politics, AI tech, and the ‘like’ economy…”  -Ryan Summers
