RMR Interviews Seattle Sub Sessions Curator Erik Robinson

Seattle Sub Sessions: Curator Erik Robinson

Heyo friends! Today I have the pleasure of writing about one of the hardest working Seattle nightlife leaders from the monthly dubstep night, Sub Sessions. Seattle Sub Sessions is an event centered around the deep dark and dirty realms of dubstep.

Sub Sessions Curator, Erik Robinson has been a friend of mine for a while now and we have worked on various projects together. One thing that we both share a love for is underground music. For this piece, I want to show some love to my boy for the hard work he’s done.

Real Respects Real Ft. Seattle Sub Sessions Curator Erik Robinson

Q: What was your inspiration for starting Sub Sessions?
A: There was a whole side of Dubstep that wasn’t getting booked in Seattle except maybe once or twice a year by the Brinkage crew. I wanted to see it come here more and the bigger companies here never seemed to care for it, so I wanted to be the one to bring it here.

Q: What is it that makes the underground music scene so special?

A: I love the underground scene because it mostly lacks a lot of the gimmicky stuff and played out music that these bigger guys play. Most shows are intimate and less crowded. The people are usually there more for the music than anything else which I think is hard to find outside of it. Basically, the underground shows are almost always VIBES.

Q: What was your first experience with dubstep?

A: The first time I heard dubstep and I was like wow what is this. This was probably back in 2010, 2011. I found the UKF channel and loved artists like Flux Pavillion, Gemmy, Zeds Dead, and of course Skrillex back then. Then I found artists like Caspa, Sukh Knight, Funtcase, Megalodon, and Cookie Monsta. I realized I really liked the deeper darker sounding tracks from the latter guys. Mattress Punch by Funtcase was one of my favorites for a long time and still is.

Q: Let’s piss some people off. Do you even RIDDIM bro? *I’m just the Messenger*

A: As much as I hate the term “riddim” it has stuck now and there’s no way past that. I do enjoy a lot of the older riddim style like D2, older Megalodon tracks, and the Monsters, and Savage Society crews.

Q: Tell us a little about your projects as an artist.

A: My project is Truble and with that, I like to produce darker styles from deeper stuff to heavier wonky stuff. As far as my sets I like to incorporate new and old Dubstep to educate people who may not have been around then or just don’t know. When making music my goal is to be different and stand out from most other artists, two of my biggest inspirations when making music are AD and Bukez Finezt. Also wanted to shout out my boys Dekka and Dregz who are huge inspirations to me and are always down to give constructive feedback on my tunes. If you don’t know those two guys I highly recommend you check them out.

There you have it folks. Be sure to support Seattle Sub Sessions at their next event and let’s get down to some real dubstep. Save all that bro shit for somewhere else!
