Summer Break Entertainment Tips For You And Your Family

It is with no doubt, summer break. A time when I find myself both excited and terrified. This is a chance to spend extra time with my kids, during the long days in warm weather. The downside to all this is that for the next three months roughly, you’ll be expected to entertain them. It can be a rough road between planning summer events and trips. With these free summer days ahead, it’s good to always have a game plan of activities before chants of “I’m bored” come out and annoy you to death.

Board Games & Cards

You can’t really go wrong with old fashion board games. Kids, more often than not want to be interacted with. Games allow you to set up some structure, teach rules and set expectations on how to get to your object. Currently, my son is seven and a half, his game of choice lately has been ‘Clue’. My daughter, who is four years old, she loves the game ‘Operation’. While we don’t play as many card games as board games, sometimes I am just as content with a game of ‘Gold Fish’ to a game of ‘Battleship’.

Arts & Crafts

As fascinating, even as horrifying as it might be, do some arts and crafts. Reasons I would encourage such activities are, first of all, you’re going to look like the best artist your kids know. Secondly, you will get a chance to see how your child goes through their creative process. You can learn about and bond over gold spray painted macaroni pieces with your child. This can be an afternoon eater if you let it. However, it can also be just a quick time burner between other activities.

Playdates

Now some parents, do not participate in play time at all. After all, it is their choice to not participate in childish behaviors with their children. I personally feel like they are missing out. Playdates can be a great way to not only give your kids valuable playtime with other kids for the summer. It also gives you a chance to visit and spend time with your mom friends you might not see during the busy school year. Having connections with other parents in important, for you as much as your child. Go hang out with your village.

Community Events

Summer is three months. It can be rough on not just your patience, but also your wallet. With that in mind, it might feel like the second round of cabin fever for the year. Getting out of the house during summer time doesn’t have to be expensive. Researching your local community events can lead to a smorgasbord of free events and activities. These can range from free morning kid’s movies at the local theater to events at museums, local park concerts or movies, and many other G-rated activities.

Go Outside

The best solution to summertime sadness, can to simply be to go outside. Go for a walk, a run, a bike ride or to just sit in the sunlight. Watch your kids play with bubbles, or scribble on the sidewalk with chalk. Watch them spray each other with the hose or play basketball in the driveway. Vitamin D is good for the skin, and the mood.

Remember that parenting is a joy, enjoy it.
