The Weigh In: Did Taylor Swift Rip Off Flume on "Don't Blame Me"?

The Weigh In: Did Taylor Swift Rip Off Flume on “Don’t Blame Me”?

Hasn’t even been a week, and I’ve caught Taylor Swift cheating (surprise, surprise). Only this time she didn’t really cheat on one person, like with Calvin Harris. She cheated her fans into buying a Flume tribute album.

Yes, I’m a fan of Taylor. Yes, I’m a fan of Flume. I liked him before he was Flume, when he was most known as one part of What So Not. Do I like some of their songs more than others? Of course. Are there songs from each of them that I wish didn’t exist. Absolutely. (Taylor: Picture to Burn, Flume: On Top).

This album doesn’t sound like her. This isn’t her. It sounds like she was blindfolded and told to throw darts at the wall, and whatever genre she hit was what she was going for with the next album. The dart happened to land in between the genre of future bass and pop.

Just to prove that I’m not that crazy, I present the track in question, “Don’t Blame Me”. Taylor’s 4th track on her new album titled ‘Reputation’. Since she decided to MAKE her fans buy her album either on iTunes or produce physical copies from the nearest Barnes and Noble (or wherever people flock to when buying CDs). I had to add this track to a third party site because none of her tracks are available on Youtube, Soundcloud, Vimeo, Napster, etc. Take a listen, and pay attention to the melody, bass, tempo, and the pitch she uses throughout the song.

Taylor Swift – Don’t Blame Me

Sound familiar? You’re not the only one that thinks so. You might remember that same melody (just short of exactly the same) in a song that may or may not have peaked at #20 in late 2016.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but something doesn’t really add up here.

Max Martin and Shellback, Dutch producers, are behind most of these tracks. In fact, Max Martin for the most part has been behind a lot of her tracks. Maybe he and Shellback have been studying too much Flume or future bass in general. If I could ask them one question, it would be this:
