California Legalizes Cannabis: Here Are 5 Things You Should Know About Smoking Pot in CA

5 Things You Should Know About Legal Weed in California

It is safe to say that the RMR team consumes more cannabis than the average Joe. Legal weed has changed many lives and has created a competitive market which has our team always trying new strains. Starting January 1st California made recreational cannabis legal. This has our team eager to make a trip down, but we can’t go without knowing some of the key laws. After doing a little research, we are happy to break down a few things everyone needs to know about legal weed in California.

Things To Know About Legal Weed in Cali

#1 – Must be 21+ to purchase legal cannabis.

Just like alcohol, you must be 21 or older to purchase cannabis. Legal weed in California also has major purchasing limitations.

An individual can possess no more than 28.5 grams of flower (1oz) and 8 grams of cannabis extracts/oils. California’s laws, unlike Washington’s, allow individuals to grow up to 6 plants at home for their personal use, but they must be located in a hidden and locked area.

#2 – Do Not Smoke In Public

Smoking cannabis is not allowed in restaurants, bars, parks or any other public area. You can smoke in the own privacy of your home, but if you’re renting, then you need your landlord’s approval. Due to the way the law is written, some cities have banned legal cannabis as a whole, so make sure you know what ones are 420 friendly.

Our team has traveled to and from California numerous times, never experiencing issues with smoking in public. We always suggest smoking somewhere safe that locals recommend. Ask your budtender where they go smoke at if its that serious.

#3 – Pot Won’t Be Available Everywhere

The state of California may have gone legal, but not all cities are on board with weed. The laws allow each city to develop their own rules and regulations in regards to cannabis. If a city as a whole does not want it, they have the opportunity to not partake. About 30% of the cities and counties have passed regulations on the sale of legal cannabis.

#4 – Employers can still fire you!

Though cannabis is legal, employers still have the right to fire you if their policy states you can’t consume this type of “drug”. We all know this is a little crazy, but since it is not federally legal, employers have the right to terminate for recreational use.

#5 – California Market Worth Billions Per Year

Experts project the legal weed industry will bring billions of tax revenue per year. This will significantly help change the perspective on cannabis as people start to see how the local community truly benefits. Colorado has seen similar growth and community support ever since cannabis was legalized in 2015.

If you’re going to buy weed in California, choose to support the legal market so that you’re community can actually grow towards becoming something better. We understand that many people do not like the new prices or the limited dosages. Just try to understand that millions of people will now have easier access to weed and overall this was what we were all advocating for right?
