The nominations are in for the 2o19 Grammy Awards! This is the 61st annual Grammy Awards ceremony, and the stakes are higher than ever in the dance industry with so many stellar releases this year. This year’s nominations are a mix of old and new artists, with some unexpected picks from the Academy.
For Best Dance Recording, the nominees are:
Above & Beyond – “Northern Soul” [ft. Richard Bedford]
Disclosure – “Ultimatum” [ft. Fatoumata Diawara]
Fisher – “Losing It”
Silk City & Dua Lipa – “Electricity” [ft. Diplo and Mark Ronson]
Virtual Self – “Ghost Voices”
I’m especially excited to see Virtual Self, Porter Robinson’s side-project, nominated for his track “Ghost Voices.” Fisher’s “Losing It” is also a strong contender for the award.
For Best Dance/Electronic Album, the nominees are:
Jon Hopkins – Singularity
Justice – Woman
Sofi Tukker – Treehouse
SOPHIE – Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides
TOKiMONSTA – Lune Rouge
This category was a little less exciting to see. With the exception of Sofi Tukker’s Treehouse and maybe TOKiMONSTA’s Lune Rogue, none of these albums were particularly noteworthy or groundbreaking for the dance community as a whole.
Candidly, the Academy seems to have snubbed San Holo and RL Grime for not nominating their incredible projects album1 and NOVA, respectively. I would also throw ZHU’s 2018 album Ringo’s Desert into the mix as a perfect candidate for the nomination.
While the 2019 Grammy nominations for Best Dance/Electronic Album are a bit disappointing, Zedd is nominated several times in categories outside dance for his record “The Middle.” It is nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Duo/Group performance. It’s interesting to note that “The Middle” was not included as part of the dance category, and is up for a pop award instead.
The 61st annual Grammy Awards will take place on February 10th, 2019 in Los Angeles. Tune in then to find out the winners!
