Audiotistic San Diego Recap: California’s Iconic EDM Festival Premiers In America’s Finest City

California’s legendary Audiotistic music festival made its debut in San Diego last week right before Thanksgiving. Held in the Bay Area this same weekend, the festival expanded its scale this year by heading further south. Taking place on November 20-21st, the North Island Credit Union Amphitheater hosted a slew of big names in EDM. Respect My Region had the opportunity to attend both days of the inaugural Audiotistic San Diego.

Presented by Insomniac, the cozy festival grounds had their typical collection of food trucks and vendors, along with their renowned Frequency 1.1 and 2.2 stages. Known for curating an eclectic blend of EDM genres along with hip-hop and more, Audiotistic San Diego didn’t fall short on the lineup. We were excited to see several acts we had recently seen, or narrowly missed at EDC Las Vegas.

The overall smaller size of Audiotistic San Diego’s festival grounds made it easier for us to capture the content we needed and get to dancing. This festival also had a tighter schedule that ran from 2 pm-11 pm. If you’re looking for a more pure and simple version of Insomniac’s usual pageantry—this was the perfect two-day event.

Day 1

Entering the festival, the parking was surprisingly easy, the line to get in taking little to no time as well. Respect My Region’s COO Joey Brabo (@Joey.Jayping) was able to join our team for the first day of fun. We came in and checked out the two bumping stages and took a look around. We found the usual photo op spots with the main photo area within eyeshot of the main stage. There were a couple of graffiti artists painting dope murals that could be seen between the stages as well.

Where this festival didn’t have the usual performers and acrobats, it made up for it with a killer lineup. Day 1 of Audiotistic San Diego had arguably the biggest names performing. We were front and center for sets from Diplo, Chemical Surf, Tchami, Herobust, Whipped Cream, and SVDDEN DEATH. It’s worth noting that the first night of the festival was laden with a lot more bass and dubstep artists. We had a blast headbanging until it hit 11 pm; Herobust especially threw down. The earlier cap to the evening wasn’t terrible considering the marathon of raving we did at EDC Las Vegas only a month prior.

Day 2

The Respect My Region team came out on Sunday afternoon to enjoy one more day of raving at Audiotistic SD. We took in outstanding sets from Acraze, Rossy, and Harvard Bass before nightfall. As we went into the festival around 3 or 4 pm, it took until sundown to really heat up in regards to attendance. When 16-year-old producer Moore Kismet took the main stage at 5 pm, the energy dramatically rose. By the time ARMNHMR was on at 8 pm, the crowd was hungry for bass. They put on a monumental set that fed everyone until they were well and full.

Between the headbanging, Sage Armstrong, VNSSA, and SIDEPIECE were throwing fat dance parties over at the Frequency 2.2 stage. Back at Frequency 1.1, Gyffin had a gorgeous set that perfectly toed the line between heavy and groovy. Finally, SLANDER fans came together en mass to see the headlining act of the evening. As usual, SLANDER did not disappoint on a monumental mix that brought together EDM, trap, dub, and bass. It was the perfect end to the first Audiotistic San Diego.

History of Audiotistic

Audiotistic is one of California’s earliest EDM festivals, starting in 1997 by Meelo Solis. His underground techno party grew exponentially and began incorporating other subgenres and rising hip-hop acts. This was when he came together with Insomniac’s Pasquale Rotella to really blow it up. Since its second awakening in the earlier millennium, the festival has gone on to host the likes of Lil Wayne, Lil Uzi Vert, Illenium, Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Rezz, and more. To see it make its entrance into San Diego only proves that this iconic and genre-bending festival is here to stay.

Thank You Insomniac Events!

To get to spend another weekend raving and seeing some of the world’s biggest names in EDM was an incredible treat. We spent Friday at Dreamstate SoCal in San Bernardino, then rode out Saturday and Sunday at Audiotistic San Diego. We can’t thank Insomniac Events enough for allowing us to come out and enjoy their magical festivals and capture the experience.
