The Relationship Between Backwoods and Hip-Hop

Blunts, Bongs, & Fruits

For decades now, before I was even alive, Backwoods made its name in hip-hop after being mentioned in multiple rap songs. It goes as far back as Biggie’s “Long Kiss Goodnight” to Juice WRLD’s unreleased “Want To” with Playboi Carti. Upon many of the various ways to smoke weed, from bongs (water pipes if you’re classy) to joints, to even fruits, many weed lovers will find a way to uplift themselves and enjoy the benefits from the plant. But, the Backwoods brand seemed to find its way into hip-hop culture unlike any other cigarillo has before.

History of the Backwoods Brand

Backwoods came onto the market in the early ’70s, coincidentally after President Nixon’s passing of the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act. Ironically, the brand’s sales seemed to skyrocket overnight despite the act’s passing. It was required by law to describe the effects of tobacco use on the packaging. But, since Backwoods aren’t technically cigarettes, they didn’t seem to be negatively affected.

During the ’80s, however, is when the Backwoods name started working its way up to the top charts in sales. The cigarillos became the “hood’s staple wrap” as it was netted in cannabis and hip-hop culture. To this day, the most popular rappers in the game will “back” their choice of consumption – from Future, 21 Savage, Travis Scott, Trippie Redd, and so on.

Are Backwoods Difficult to Roll?

Those with experience rolling Woods might agree with this next statement. Backwoods tend to be much trickier to roll than their counterparts, like Swisher Sweets, White Owls, and so on. The reason being is because the actual “leaf” doesn’t have the same shape as the majority of wraps. While the leaves in other wraps look more even, Backwoods have a much more natural shape to them.

HotNewHipHop has a series on their YouTube channel called “How to Roll a Backwoods.” In this series, popular rappers show their method of rolling up a blunt. You can see rappers like Lil Baby, $uicideboy$, and Tory Lanez appear on the show.

Tips & Tricks to Rolling Backwoods

When buying Backwoods, it’s always key to check the packaging for the quality of the cigarillos. This will tell you how fresh they are, as you want to aim for softness in your leaf. Having a hard and dry leaf will make the rolling-up process a little more challenging, and will require much more saliva.

Also, a perk to using Backwoods is that you don’t have to cut the wrap in order to discard the tobacco inside and replace it with the good stuff. You’re able to open them by hand, which also makes it easier to roll up, if you have the right method.
