It was a picturesque sunny Sunday in Seattle. The air was crisp and the sky was clear as the seagulls squawked above Elliott Bay. Seth McDonald was playing DJ as we cruised along the waterfront downtown. He scrolled through his phone saying that he had a rough master of the new single from All Star Opera featuring Decent At Best titled, “Be Right Back,” and he put it on the stereo.
When the song opened up it felt like the glowing beam of light that was warming me up on that chilly fall day. As if I had just rolled down the window, the drums blew a cool breeze across my face. The rhythm of the bass was flowing like the waves lapping against the seawall. Guitar licks and keys fluttering in the wind like the autumn leaves along the road. From the beginning ooh-ooh’s and la-de-da’s, I had goosebumps.
Oz tells his tale of romance in the first verse. “Without you, all I think is about you. Hear your voice and it sounded of birds chirping. See your face in the clouds, picture-perfect.” I was already getting emotional at this point. I felt that he captured the love between his wife and him so beautifully within his verse. Then, Andy from Decent At Best came through with the hook. His buttery voice melted into my heart and I could feel the tears starting to well up in my eyes.
Flow Carter helped amplify the chorus with his vibrant trumpet work before he dove into the second verse. He was skipping bars across the instrumental pond switching his flows up at the perfect times. As someone who has followed ASO a majority of their career, I could immediately hear the growth and refinement in both of their lyrics, their deliveries, and their singing voices.
Overall, hearing the progression from the band with the beauty of the song set to that sunny morning scenery had me crying in the passenger seat of Seth’s car. Moments like that remind me how lucky I am to be able to experience firsthand the talent within the art scene in the greater Seattle area.
