Real Respects Real Ft. DJ & Visual Artist Bionica

Real Respects Real Ft. DJ & Visual Artist Bionica

It has been a while since I have released a visual artist piece, and I have someone that I want to share with you. Artist name: Bionica. Level of badass: 10,000. I first met Bionica at an underground show here in Seattle. That was when I found out that she was a phenomenal DJ, and an extremely talented visual artist. She has given RMR the pleasure of featuring one of her pieces here so check it out!Bionica Art

A tribute to two extremely talented, and exceptionally kind women she has always looked up to.

With every visual spotlight, I try to connect my audience with new artists. I chatted with Bionica for Real Respects Real to get more perspective on her art.

Real Respects Real With DJ & Visual Artist: Bionica

Q: How would you describe your art style?
A: Still developing. I spend a lot of time looking at artists on instagram/tumblr/etc., and try to learn new techniques from my favorites. A lot of my last works have been ‘learning pieces’ but I guess one word could be hairy. I read in a comic a long time ago that magical beings have insanely long hair, because that’s where their power rests, so most of my pieces are floating in it.

Q: From the first time I met you you seemed very mysterious. How does your personality influence your creations?
A: I’m laughing because I definitely don’t see myself as such hahaha! Way too clumsy but if you really look close, there’s always some type of imperfection. Smudges, stains from greasy food fingers, or completely uneven due to my impatience. I love symmetry but it is not my friend. My mom told me as a child, it’s all about making a mistake look like it was done on purpose.

Q: Sometimes as a visual artist is challenging putting your work out there how do you overcome this burden and what advice do you have for aspiring artists?
A: The internet/Instagram helps a lot. I found a group through one of my favorite Seattle-based artist, that meets at different bars to draw and get to know other local artists. That’s one way of getting your foot in a few doors. I’m actually regretting deleting my Twitter account as I’ve met some rad people through there, and gotten a few commissions too. This art gig is definitely a ‘who you know’ type thing. As far as advice, I have only this: “No one cares. Work harder.” That’s been the most humbling and grounding quote I’ve come across thus far.

Q: Also last question. Do you feel like there are parallels between you visual art styles and the music you dj?
A: I suppose so, yes. darkness and general creepiness. As we in the concvlt say, skulls on everything!
