Portland Rapper Bocha Releases New Album M.A.A.N.

Portland MC William Hayes A.K.A Bocha is back with a seven-piece joint that’s perfect for the dreary winter vibes as frost and ice take home in the pacific northwest. M.A.A.N. “Maturing As A Nigga” is produced by PDX beat wizard Sxlxmxn (pronounced Solomon) while Hayes mixed and engineered the project himself.

Bocha reflects on the hardships from his life, from being on his own since he was fourteen years old to his mother’s drug addictions. Through the pain and sacrifice, Bocha has found salvation in hip-hop music, his somber heartfelt rhymes hit home for someone like me whose mother also suffered from addiction during the entirety of my childhood. Honest messages like this provide inspiration to a lot of kids suffering through similar circumstances, reminding them that their suffering isn’t unique and that they’re not alone.

Tangled in with heartfelt poetry are banger beats and hard verses about smoking chronic, chasing girls and grinding with his crew. Standout tracks for me include “Watch Me,” “Relax” featuring his persistent partner in crime Deon Thomas, “Dude Where’s My Car,” and “BLANG.” “BLANG” is a quintessential “I don’t give a fuck” anthem on the lines of Mr. Fantastic’s “Bonfire Sessions.” This song alone makes the project worth $7, let alone the thoughtful lyrics, melodic-thumping beats and fun features from Bocha’s talented friends.
