Winter Brings Warm Vibes On The Brodcast THAW Sendai Mike Remix

Dreamy, poignant and expressive, The Brodcast brings moving lyrics and soulful beats using Pacific Northwest experiences as inspiration.

Just in time for this Winter Solstice, The Brodcast teamed up with local engineer and producer Sendai Mike to remix the title track from Spring time’s EP Thaw, to brighten the year’s end. For those who have followed The Brodcast’s music before, it’s worth noting that production-wise this remix is more bouncy than previous works and brings that winter lift, like a warm sweater during these chilly days, to the track.

“These ebbs and flows represent something endless and deep to me about the human experience; as we spiral through reality, revisiting the same seasons, the same view spots, the same deep breaths, we never experience any of it in the same way twice Brodie Peterson

Socially distanced and safe- I got a short interview with Brodie Peterson aka The Brodcast to better showcase this artist and how his music is produced and developed.

Masha: How did this song come about?

Brodie Peterson of The Brodcast: Back in January 2020, I went down to LA for a week and wrote something like 15 songs with one of my main producers, Jonny Nice (who used to play in Seattle bands Crystal & Quiet and Soultanz.) Five of these tracks fit themselves together into a little winter to spring EP that I called Thaw, and this is a remix of the title track from that.

During that time, last winter, while I was writing and recording this project, Sendai Mike was actually living at our house. Every night around 10-11pm, some configuration of Mike, Jules Thoma (vocals on the track), Simon Wolf (local poet and organizer with Stay Happy Collective) and I would congregate after work in our kitchen to drink some tea and wind down from the day. Other nights we’d sit around the fire with some beers and listen to music. It was a special time, and the music I wrote really reflected that warm sense of camaraderie through the dark gray Seattle wintertime.

My hope for this song is to invite people back into that world of the EP… I put Thaw out in April because it was already together and scheduled, but it was just a weird time to release music with the pandemic kicking off.

We were honored to hear Mike take it to such a beautiful place, especially since he was there experiencing and contributing to the raw materials that the song originated from.

Masha: What does the EP mean to you?

Brodie: My work is often inspired by basic elements of life – water, fire, earth, air – and in how they work together through natural cycles, like sunsets, moon cycles, seasons, tides…

These ebbs and flows represent something endless and deep to me about the human experience, as we spiral through reality, revisiting the same seasons, the same view spots, the same deep breaths, but never experiencing any of it in the same way twice.

This project continues that focus, but also grounds it in human relationship, in personal reflection and moments of anxiety, in daily life. The EP starts off in sort of a lonely, anxious place, but moves eventually into the sunshine again, just as we go through the darker months of winter and emerge again into spring.

No matter what language you speak or where you come from, you know what it means to find warmth in the cold. That’s survival, it’s in our bones. Taking a deep breath to cope, missing aspects of a past lover, finding beauty in chaos — everyone knows these experiences at some level.

Masha: Anything else to share?

Brodie: I’m just honored to work with the different creators involved in this song and on the EP.

I love to create and most of my friendships revolve around creativity – it’s my favorite way to relate with people, through projects. Jules Thoma, who features on three of the songs was instrumental in bringing the EP to life, with many late nights in the studio, and conversations around the fireplace. Her performance on the remix really takes it to the next level. Heather Thomas features on “Chords,” a song about the state of the world which grew out of a long and beautiful conversation we had one day. Ian (Jonny Nice) is so fun to work with, feels like we’re just meant to collaborate with how easily it flows.

This remix and the EP capture a moment in time and reflect some of the brilliant people in my life, and I hope it can be a gift for folks to listen to.

Listen to the Thaw EP

What connects me with this record is its representation of the year that transpired, as this EP was released before we knew what 2020 would entail. While the world was shutting down due to a global pandemic, The Brodcast created and released a mini-album titled Thaw, in time for the winter cold to melt away, bringing Spring’s sunshine and blooms.

The Thaw remix connects listeners to that relatable feeling of everyday life, explored within the space we have hunkered down in while isolating. The remix done by Sendai Mike uses musical styles of hip hop and dream pop with digitized jazzy undertones and strong lyrics that instantly pulls the audience into a new world of beats and flowy tunes.

The Brodcast’s newest song is like a hug from your best friend, lover or parent that you haven’t seen in months- it just feels good to have in your life again.
