How to Build a Fanbase from Scratch as a Music Artist Utilizing Social Media

Identify your target market

First, you have to figure out who your target market is. This is not who you want your fans to be. This is realistically who your fans are likely to be. By identifying your target market you know exactly who your fans are and what kind of content they are looking to consume. You can look at artists with similar sounds and/or brands to have a better idea of who these people may be.

You should also figure out the answers to questions like:

  • How old are they?
  • What do they do for fun?
  • What kind of jobs do they have?
  • Where do they shop?
  • What apps do they use?

Knowing who your fans are will make it easier to target them effectively

By identifying the answers to these questions, and more, you will know what niche market to target. Knowing who your fans are will make it easier to figure out ways to effectively target them.

What social platforms does your target market use?

Now that you’ve figured out who your target market is, look at what social platforms they use the most. For example, Gen Z is mostly on TikTok and Instagram while Boomers are more on Facebook. Millennials seem to be on the widest variety of platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, Twitch, and more. Much more than generation goes into play here, however. Make sure to analyze the other traits of your target market to more accurately figure out what platforms they use.

Post valuable content consistently on one or two social platforms

Now that you know what social platforms your fans use, choose one or two of them to focus on. You’ll want to build up and fully optimize your profiles on these platforms. Then, you’ll need to post consistently. Don’t post just anything; post what your target market wants to see. Remember to post content with value, and specifically value to your target market. Valuable content can be either educational, entertaining, inspiring, or content that connects with people.

Engage consistently on your main social platforms

Posting valuable content consistently is the main thing you need to do, but there’s also a little more to it. You will also need to engage with users. This means engaging with your followers and non-followers.

Engage with your followers by commenting on their posts, interacting with their stories, replying to their comments on your posts and direct messaging them. Engage with non-followers by going to hashtags that your target market uses. Like and comment on non-followers post with something meaningful, and with more than a few words. It can also help to like a few more of their pictures or give them a follow. You can also find prospective fans in the comments of similar artists, and many more places depending on the platform.

If you consistently post valuable content and engage on one or two platforms, your fanbase will no doubt steadily grow. There’s many more strategies to gain fans and build a loyal fanbase, but utilizing social media is one of the best ways in this day and age- but only if you do it right. Remember: consistency, providing value, and engagement.
