I remember as a gamer in 2009, dreaming of the day when I, an Xbox loyalist could play with my PlayStation mates. Ten years later the dream is a full-fledged reality as cross-platform play is in full effect. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo have all enabled cross-console play for games like Minecraft, Fortnite, and Rocket League.

Sony was apprehensive to allow cross-platform play at first, but player outcry was strong and fast. This quickly changed Sony’s tune and allowed Fortnite and Rocket League to be first games to have cross-platform functionality on all major systems: Xbox, Switch, PlayStation 4, PC.

This type of collaboration has opened new avenues for major industry collaboration. For years, the big three were scrapping for exclusive titles and content to get the upper hand on one-another. While exclusivity will never leave the industry entirely, it’s amazing to see these corporate giants put aside some differences to bring the world’s largest gaming communities closer together.
