Washington DC Nightlife Restrictions Lifted

Washington DC Plans to Lift Capacity Restrictions for Nightclubs this Summer

With COVID-19 cases on a decline and vaccinations rising, all across the country we are seeing restrictions lifting. While some states like Florida and Texas have been ahead of the rest, areas like California and Washington DC have kept stricter rules. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser recently announced that due to favorable coronavirus trends, many restrictions will be lifted in the capital.

“You might remember that our daily case rate peaked in January at 45.9. And today you can see it’s down to 6.6,” the Mayor said at a recent news conference. She explains that

All capacity and other restrictions have been lifted on most businesses including restaurants and places of worship on May 21st. Nightclubs and bars are now allowed to increase indoor capacity from 25% to 50%. Starting June 11th, all capacity restrictions will be lifted for bars and nightclubs. The current requirement of nightlife venues to close by midnight will also be lifted on June 11. Venues will be able to close at the pre-pandemic times of 2AM on weekdays and 3AM on weekends.

With this positive news, comes more. Famed DC venue Echostage announced that it will be returning on June 11th.

For large sports and entertainment venues, events must apply for a waiver of the restrictions on a case-by-case basis. Starting June 11th, these venues will also have capacity restrictions lifted.

This news comes just in time for LGBTQ Pride Month. Past restrictions prevented DC’s Capital Pride Alliance from holding its annual Pride Parade during the month of June. There are no set plans yet, but the Pride Alliance plans to go on with the parade this June. If not, they are planning for a possible festival and parade in October.

“We will definitely be celebrating Pride in June,” Capital Pride Executive Director Ryan Bos said. “We just received this information as well. So, we will be getting further information. We have not been informed that they will be issuing any permits yet, so at this time we are moving forward with our original plans for doing things.”
