Mysterious Electronic Artist Deathpact Drops New Single “Formality”

The enigma known as Deathpact has just dropped their new single “Formality.” Their minimalistic website confirms that this is the first single off of their next EP, Cipher II. Worth noting is that Cipher I, Deathpact’s first EP, dropped just a couple weeks ago. This rapid-release schedule for the mystery artist is both remarkable and bizarre.

Deathpact made their debut over the summer with their single “Danger”, and was catapulted into the spotlight shortly thereafter because of their connection to Rezz. Their track with Rezz, “Life & Death”, is a fan-favorite from Rezz’s Certain Kind of Magic album.

This newest track, “Formality”, leans heavily on sampling. It starts out with a sample from the 1941 film All That Money Can Buy (also titled The Devil and Daniel Webster). The clip is from a part of the film where the main character is unknowingly about to make a literal deal with the devil. The clip contains the following quote:

“A clever man like yourself — he can find money anywhere. Money to pay his bills — money for his wife and his children — money enough to be a rich man. All he needs is a friend to point it out to him. Like this!”

Then, the track launches into the dark, punchy instrumental that Deathpact’s fans know them for. The vibe of the track is a little more relaxed than some of Deathpact’s previous releases. However, “Formality” still warrants equal praise with its attention to detail in the complex layering of sounds. The track is broken up into two sections with a middle portion that introduces the sound of a clicking polaroid camera repeatedly. This sound was teased on Deathpact’s Twitter account earlier in the week:

The camera sound continues through the rest of the track, eventually slowing down near the end until it comes to a stop. There is a muffled sample near the end of the song that is hard to hear; I couldn’t distinguish what it was saying.

With such a mysterious artist, the smallest details in a track like this one make all the difference to Deathpact’s fans. What does the All That Money Can Buy sample mean, with its reference to making a contract with the devil? Why is the mask for this track lined with a spiral of books? What could the title, “Formality”, mean?
