DeColo Lures Us Back In With Surprise ‘too-sahy-did’ EP

Last Saturday, Denver-based artist, DeColo dropped his third EP, too-sahy-did (pronounced as “two-sided”), completely unannounced on SoundCloud. The last time we heard from DeColo, was on his 2016 Psychedelic hip-hop/R&B and Soul EP, Chocolate Rain. The project hit every nostalgic groove months before Childish Gambino’s psychedelic ditty, “Redbone” reminded us to “stay woke”. On too-sahy-did, DeColo brings the groove back to 2019 and reminds us why he’s one of the most underrated artists in the city.

The small, two-song package exposes the process of a failed relationship. Sometimes, you miss the metaphorical “black ice” and then still feel like you got played in the end. “At the time I felt like all of my connections with the opposite sex were based in the physical and in the idea of me/the other person… not in reality,” he said. “I wasn’t lonely in the sense that I had someone in my face all the time,” he continued. “…I was lonely in the sense that I didn’t feel any true connection and felt like I was only being appreciated for the idea of me rather than the reality of me.”

Three long years after his last release, too-sahy-did lets us back into the world of DeColo. The rapper/singer/visual artist spent the time on self-reflection, growth, and development. “I didn’t release any music for years out of insecurity of them not being received well and over time this developed into a crippling aspect of my life,” he candidly shared. “It began to feed into writer’s block and desires to keep all of my music offline indefinitely. After working on my mental health for years, I decided ‘fuck it’. If I don’t just drop something, I will never get over this fear and be able to move forward.”
