10 Female DJs Elevating EDM Through Innovative Sounds

As we wrap up the last day of Women’s History Month, we want to put you onto some of our favorite female DJs that are making history every day with their innovative sounds, perseverance in a male-dominated space, and activism towards making the industry more inclusive.

While there is an abundance of female and non-binary talent in music, the industry still remains male-dominated and many obstacles arise for minority acts because of this. In fact, in 2017, only 26% of acts at major US music festivals included women or non-binary musicians; in 2022, all-male acts make up 64% of major US music festival lineups. Though there has been a shift in the right direction in recent years, there is still much more that can and should be done towards making the industry a more equal and safe space for women and non-binary artists.

A Hundred Drums

Thunderous, ground stomping sounds make up A Hundred Drums’ music and live sets. The Denver-based DJ/producer cultivates a meticulously crafted sound, blending hip-hop, psychedelic bass, and indigenous hand drums together, creating a cohesive yet explosive cadence. A Hundred Drums brings underground music to main stages, spreading modern innovative sounds to the masses. She recently took on the main stage at BUKU and has many other festivals under her belt and lined up.

Last year, A Hundred Drums released her Enough is Enough EP under Zeds Dead’s Deadbeats label. This politically potent project “outlines the struggles of being Black in America, set against the backdrop of police violence, systemic racism, and the protest movement still pervasive in a world one year removed from the death of George Floyd.” While electronic music doesn’t typically contain such strong messages, A Hundred Drums goes beyond just computer noises, bringing much-needed substance and activism to the scene.

NotLö

One of the most exciting emerging names in bass music right now is Denver-based producer/DJ NotLö. RMR first came across the budding artist at Firefly Music Festival, who wrapped up the whole festival with an intoxicating, weighty deep bass set. We then caught her at Suwannee Hulaween for a b2b set with VEIL, full of dark and distorted sounds. Then again at Okeechobee Music Festival for not one, but two sets, including another with VEIL. NotLö seems to be endlessly touring as well as consistently engaging with her fans and the industry online. Both of which have helped her build not just a large fanbase, but an incredibly loyal one.

But don’t just trust our word. Respected names in EDM, including GRiZ and CloZee, have cosigned her, further solidifying NotLö’s place in the electronic music landscape.
