Nothing defines West-Coast-cool better than a good G-Funk track. The genre’s been a California staple since its emergence in the early 90’s and although it’s taken a turn from the main-stream since then, the sound still lives on today. So I give you G.A.S. (Gallons And Smoke), the hip-hop trio out of Seattle reminding us all why G-Funk was so cool in the first place.
G.A.S.’s new track “Just Another Day” has all the soul of G-Funk. It has that funky bass line. It has that almost alien-like, whistling synth. It’s a combination that we don’t hear all that much in the modern-day but something about it— even when it’s recent— is so nostalgic. It’s the closest hip-hop ever gets to groovy and that’s something music could use these days, a little groove. It’s funny how, with some time, throwbacks can actually be refreshing, how the revival of something old can seem so new. This new take on an old genre is what makes G.A.S. so unique to me. Instead of following trends, they’re sticking to what they love.
The video for “Just Another Day” takes us around a tour of Ballard, to local spots like the (now closed) Westernco Donut shop and the (soon-to-be-closed) Chinese Restaurant, Louie’s. It’s a simple track and a simple video. “It’s just another day,” the chorus sings. “Feeling free. Ain’t nothing changed. Just doin’ me.” Chillin’ with the homies. Cooling out. Feeling like not shit matters and nothing needs to. That’s the vibe the song puts off and it’s the perfect kind of vibe to blaze to. I like seeing some old-school style live on and having always been a fan of G-Funk, I’m going to keep this track in my rotation. Check it out down below.
