Glass House Farms Dominates California’s Cannabis Market Following Massive Vertical Merger

Glass House Farms is a California-based cannabis company on the verge of rapid expansion. After locking down a solid vertical merger with retail company Element 7 and Southern California Greenhouse, Glass House will undoubtedly become the most dominant legal cannabis company in the state of California. With this expansion, Glass House will look to dominate California’s cannabis market and be extremely well-positioned for interstate markets as well.

Graham Farrar founded Glass House 6 years ago after realizing that the legal-grade cannabis market was flourishing with opportunity. Farrar essentially combined the things he loves to create one of the biggest greenhouse operations at the time. After years of continuous growth, Glass House is focusing on the quality of their cultivation operation.

According to Farrar, “Greenhouses are the best way to get the highest quality at the lowest cost for cannabis. We live on the Central Coast of California, so my goal is to take the best lighting system in the universe and give it a glass roof so the elements don’t hit them too hard, and you can basically do indoor.”

Glass House Pairs Cannabis Quality With Colossal Scale

Working with California’s natural climate has been a key factor to Graham Farrar’s success. It is no secret that California’s climate is ideal for cannabis cultivation. Farrar believes that this is why his company is able to expand at such a rate without sacrificing product quality. Glass House focuses on the perfect greenhouse operation. With an ideal climate, nature does about 85% of the work. “We spend 8k a month on 150k square feet because mother nature is giving us most of what we need,” says Farrar.

Graham Farrar’s main goal is to cultivate craft at scale, a feat many want to claim but few can live up to. With California’s climate doing most of the work, Glass House grows high-quality products at a staggering rate. Following this success, Farrar has worked to increase his operation from 150,000 square feet to 500,000 square feet.

Now, Glass House is preparing to purchase 5.5 million square feet of greenhouse cultivation facilities. After this purchase and their renovation, Glass House will host the largest cannabis greenhouse on Earth. While their numbers continue to rise, their formula to grow remains consistent. According to Farrar, “I’ve had closets where I took care of three plants meticulously, we want to amplify that love at scale. We want to be big because we want to make a lot of good product. Craft at scale is the goal, big is not the goal, big is just a better way of getting it to more people.”

Sustainability Equals Lower Costs For Everyone

The greenhouse model is pretty much baked into their brand name. Glass House represents the glass pane greenhouses that they use to cultivate cannabis. The company is ever chasing the “triple bottom line” of efficiency, which is good for business, good for consumers, and good for the environment. Their existing efforts to leave the smallest carbon footprint have revolved around cultivating an agriculture product with the lowest amount of electricity and water usage possible.

The acquisition of these new facilities would provide an even lower resource usage due to the existing technology in place. The greenhouse was designed to allow 30% more light to pass through due to the pane sizes as well as solar improvements that greatly offset electricity usage. Their emphasis on sustainability drives the cost of production down, which in turn drives the cost for consumers down; and ultimately utilizes fewer resources, which lowers their impact on the planet.

Graham Farrar Believes Federal Legalization is on the Horizon

With Glass House’s plans to purchase one of the largest greenhouses in the United States, how will this company sit in a scattered market? The answer lies in the potential for interstate commerce. While this company continues to focus within California, they are sitting in a perfect spot to provide California cannabis products at scale across state borders when laws permit.

According to Business Insider, Glass House’s year-on-year revenue grew by 185% to $53 million in 2020. With interstate commerce on the horizon, Farrar will lead Glass House to even more growth within the next few years.

“It took 80 years to get 12 states legal and it took 2 months to get 4 more,” said Farrar. “I’ll be very surprised if we spend another 420 without federal legalization.”

While this is a very hopeful outlook, Glass House is preparing to capitalize on these developments. And with their market position, Farrar and Glass House will absolutely take a big piece of the cake. As it is now, California’s cannabis products are in high demand in states where cannabis is fully legal. “The black market has shown us that there is a true demand for California cannabis. Even states with legal adult-use cannabis STILL see California cannabis sold illegally, simply due to consumer demand,” mentioned Graham.

Farrar compares this to the Cuban cigar market. Even though cigars are legal in the states, Cuban cigars are not. However, Cubans are desirable due to their quality, and therefore, Cubans are very popular in the states. Similarly, California cannabis quality is unbeaten in the states. With Glass House cultivating this country’s premier cannabis products, the introduction of interstate commerce will lead to even more developments for Graham Farrar’s massive cannabis operation.
