Grandmaster Flash, one of the true creators and greatest innovators of hip-hop, as well as the leader of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, will be teaching at University of Buffalo in New York this fall. His residency is a part of UB’s Working Artists Lab presented by the university’s Arts Collaboratory; which features a hip-hop inspired program this full fall semester.

The residency at UB gives me a chance to tell hip-hop’s whole story. The sights. The sounds. The places and the moments. It’s important that we get this history right. For the next generation to take music and art in new directions, they have to know where that music and art came from, who made it and how.

Whether you’re a hip-hop head wanting to learn more about the history and industry or a student MC working to perfect your craft, any words that come from Grandmaster Flash will surely benefit you. We’re talking a legend that quite literally shaped hip-hop here, after all.

Learning from Grandmaster Flash Would be an Invaluable Experience

Grandmaster Flash crafted a whole new way of making music in the early 70s as he experimented with deejaying, backspinning and manipulating records like never seen before; which is only in addition to his highly impressive lyrics, rhythm, and flow. Nearly everything this artist did made a huge impact on the progression of hip-hop and the genre and culture as a whole.

He will a lifetime of experience and knowledge to UB as he trains university students for the very first time. If you’re a student from UB or Buffalo State College, or a western New York artist, do not miss out on this opportunity to learn from one of the most important artists in the history of hip-hop.

Grandmaster Flash will be in-person at University of Buffalo starting September 30th, until October 2nd. Prior to these dates, he will be apart of several Zoom calls. To learn further regarding details about the programming, visit this website.

Even if you aren’t eligible to take part in this program, I still recommend you visit the website as there is a list of book and film recommendations from Grandmaster Flash himself.

University of Buffalo Arts Collaboratory Working Artists Lab With Grandmaster Flash

The website states a summary of the program:

“Hip-hop tells the story of people, places, and things. Coming up on its 50th year anniversary in 2023, hip-hop has become the culture, lifestyle, and history of this country. With collaborations locally and nationally, the University at Buffalo Arts Collaboratory Working Artists Lab will work with hip-hop legend Grandmaster Flash and various artists in the field to dig deep into how hip-hop has cultivated stories through collaboration.

“Over the course of several weeks, University at Buffalo and Buffalo State College students, together with Buffalo-area artists, will build upon their stories through the foundational teachings and practices of hip-hop. There will be a final presentation through various mediums of art to bring everyone into the stories developed through the cipher of hip-hop.”
