Jay-Z’s Monogram Cannabis Company is Expensive, Sleek, and Hollywood

Monogram is a brand that looks expensive and feels like it was created by celebrities because it was. Jay-Z partnered with California-based company, Caliva, to launch this joint venture at the end of 2020. GQ describes the 100,000-square-foot growing facility as having a “sterile, post-apocalyptic vibe” and also said, “the air smells like money.”

The Monogram website is sleek and boasts spinning graphics, creative behind-the-scenes shots, videos of people talking, and the ability to filter how you want your weed to make you feel: down to the terpenes and effect.

The photos used in the behind-the-scenes shots look like they could be in a Vogue magazine spread. The photographer was inspired by the motto: “Attractive people, doing attractive things in attractive places.”

The brand seems to be taking luxury, old-school Hollywood vibes and remixing them with modern stoner culture.

While the strains are beautifully displayed with spinning graphics and gorgeous imagery, they aren’t listed as indica, sativa, or hybrid. This brand seems to be catered toward users who don’t care to know all the science behind what they’re smoking, because the products are based on the feeling the strain inspires and not necessarily the strain itself.

The strains don’t have traditional names. Instead, each strain is labeled with a number, much like designer perfumes. No. 08 is strong and earthy, while No. 03 delivers sweet mint with notes of grape, diesel, and citrus. Additionally, Monogram offers “light” strains which don’t pack as much of a punch as their normal products, but nonetheless, still deliver a desirable experience.

Monogram is Expensive

There’s an option to play beachy, reggae music while you scroll through the different options. The first song that pops up is aptly named, “Expensive Shit.” The cannabis products are pricey indeed. A single blunt, the Strain No. 88 Hand-Roll, sells for $50.

“Monogram marks a new chapter in cannabis defined by dignity, care, and consistency. It is a collective effort to bring you the best, and a humble pursuit to discover what the best truly means,” the website states.

Although the feel of the brand seems to divert from old-school stoner culture with precision-perfect, almost sterile branding and cultivation, you can’t argue that it isn’t well designed and executed. As for the products? Each received mixed reviews. However, the overall sentiment is that it was good, and could be worth a splurge for celebratory moments.
