Since its release last year Lil Nas X’s crossover trap country hit “Old Town Road” became a viral sensation on TikTok. With the song aligning with the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, even referencing the game, it’s gotten an even crazier amount of attention. Recently controversy arose when Billboard took the track off its country charts last month despite its ample success.
Billboard’s best response was that the song “wasn’t country enough for the country chart.” Lil Nas X said he thought the single should be considered both a country song as well as a trap song. He told Time that “It’s not one, it’s not the other.” To stand in solidarity with Nas X country legend Billy Ray Cyrus took to Twitter to express his thoughts on the removal of “Old Town Road.” He said “only outlaws get outlawed. Welcome to the club!”
To take it even further, Billy Ray hopped up in the studio with Nas X to produce a remix to the viral hit. Listen to Billy Ray Cyrus drop bars on the cut below and tell us what you think about this interesting blend of genres in the comments.
