Mafi D’s 1522 Album Is What The Seattle Streets Need

If you’re a hip-hop fan in Seattle, you need to know Mafi D. The rapper just dropped his latest album 1522 and it’s filled with wins, losses, and an honest self-reflection on coming up from the streets of Seattle.

Seattle has long been a hip-hop city although the typical “Seattle hip-hop fan” may have a limited view of the various backgrounds The Town has to offer. Macklemore is the biggest artist of this generation and Sir Mix-A-Lot is one of our biggest claims to fame. Lil Mosey blew up on the internet before he ever had a chance to bubble inside the 206 ecosystems.

No disrespect to any of the aforementioned artists, but locally we don’t have voices speaking directly from the streets on today’s issues. Our local media and venues have long preferred non-rap creative artistry and “safe” figures to speak for the genre. Long story short, the streets have been forgotten.

Mafi D unapologetically claims the Central District as home. He isn’t the first artist to represent the CD but he’s currently one of the most relevant voices speaking out of the historic Seattle neighborhood.

On 1522, Mafi brings a sound that is very relevant today while also not being afraid to explore various sonic backdrops. Listeners will get some upbeat hype music along with more emotion-driven pieces featuring limited instrumentation in the beat. Rap music has clearly evolved from strictly bars on beats to melodic offerings, auto-tune, and sounds that draw inspiration from rock and pop. Mafi covers all that and more on this album.

Mafi D “Red Faygo” (Music Video)

The first single we featured from this album was “Rules” when Mafi D dropped the music video. This was a more current West Coast vibe which is further explored in 1522 on records like, “Like That,” and “No Regrets” featuring RedHead. Songs like, “Windchill” with Lewie, explore the more chill melodic music that say a BLXST fan would love. If you missed the recent “Sir Mix Alot” video with Mafi D and Lewie, we recommend catching up on that as well! The track “Chills” will give traditional hip-hop fans a taste of some classic vibes mixed with a very 2022-relevant cadence. Meanwhile songs like, “Iawai,” and “Canada Goose,” provide pure emotion.

The album only holds a small handful of features which is rare in 2022 but Mafi makes sure to deliver on every single record. Tap in and let us know what you think of this project.
