Smooth doesn’t cut describing what the Marcus Elliot Trio achieves. With throaty sax and perfectly extended bass chords, their pace is between nodded out jazz and rock music. For those looking for a fresh point to get into a modern jazz outfit, there’s little as welcoming as this group. Through holding notes in a way reminiscent of early jazz and the relentless pacing of certain songs, a variety is displayed in great taste. Passages don’t drag, but they’re not raced through. Instead, a steady confidence dominates the atmosphere. Those lucky enough to attend only had to spend the $12 to enjoy one of the most convincing currently active bands in the genre.
