Meduso Talks Cannabis And New Music Ahead of Northern Nights Music Festival [Exclusive Interview]

Meduso is an underground DJ residing in California who continues to perform epic sets across the country. This week, he is due to perform his mix of psychedelic vibes, heavy metal, and bass music at the Northern Nights Music Festival; right in his backyard.

Catch Meduso at The Northern Nights Music Festival

The Northern Nights Music Festival will be under the shade of the iconic Redwood Forest and feature a fusion of music and cannabis activities for festival-goers to enjoy. Not only will the event have legal onsite cannabis consumption and sales, but they were also the first festival to make this happen. When asked about his excitement to play the festival, Meduso said, “I’m really excited for Northern nights; I’ve heard only great things. Something about being out in the Redwoods in Northern California on the river sounds great to me. So, I’m definitely happy to get invited to play some music and even more excited to check it out; it’s gonna be fun.”

Get to Know Meduso

Meduso started being a DJ as a passion project, but started out in music as a drummer. Now, he is a full-time creative who enjoys audio and visual design, which he uses to create entrancing YouTube Videos and captivating DJ performances. His name comes from the scientific name for jellyfish, despite people thinking it pays homage to the Greek myth of Medusa. The jellyfish, to him, represents a balance of beautiful imagery with the danger people associate with the beautiful creatures. However, he does play into the Greek mythology theme with his Odyssey mix series.

Although his discography only goes back to 2019, don’t let his time on the map fool you; he has performed in all corners of the US. “I’m from and grew up in the Boston area. Then I went to school, in North Carolina for like four or so years, and then moved out to Portland, Oregon for a little while. I was there for about two and a half years; right before quarantine and through quarantine. Now I’m down in the Santa Monica area. So tried out the four corners and I’m just gotta make my way to the middle.” His favorite sets to perform so far have been in Jacksonville and Tampa in Florida, but he anticipates that the Northern Nights Festival will be one to remember.

Now that Meduso has played sets in Florida, Texas, Arizona, and beyond, he does his best to read the room and give listeners dynamic sets. He said, “At cool fests like this, where you’re out in the Redwood, I’ll definitely play a little more cozy style world base. I like to mix in things that play to the setting a little bit and kind of makes you fully immersed in that festival or weekend or wherever you are.” It is this attention to detail that makes his sets so mystifying. To prepare for his sets, he creates groupings of songs that work well together in different high and low-energy settings. As a result, he makes a series of highs and lows that can take the listeners on an adventure.

I also learned in the interview that he has written music inspired by art and makes Pinterest boards to organize music and art ideas. His goal with his music is to give listeners an almost cinematic feel, and he plans to include more AR visuals in future projects. He recently released his new EP “Drop In,” which has an infectious bass that makes you get up and dance. He described the sound of the new EP as a high-energy summer mix inspired by old dubstep.

“I hadn’t written much of that high energy, high tempo stuff, and it kind of just came out. At the end of quarantine, I think I was just ready to get out there and have some fun again. And the music just kind of wrote itself.”

In the future, he’d like to bring his ideas for exhibitions, artist collective spaces, and immersive experiences to life, as well as collaborate with some of his favorite artists in the industry, including Lincoln Park, Billie Eilish, and Halsey.

Meduso & Cannabis

Meduso enjoys smoking cannabis in joints and has no favorite strain but enjoys a sativa during work and an indica for chilling. However, it wasn’t until Meduso moved to Portland that he got a taste of a great grow for a reasonable price. “Ever since I moved to Portland, I could actually get my hands on good stuff. You think you’re smoking good stuff, and then I went to Portland and was like: oh man, what have I been doing my whole life… I’m in the LA area now. It’s good; it’s just expensive, but Portland, I don’t know if it’s just cuz it rains all the time or if there’s something in the soil up there, but it’s pretty fire up there.” His favorite music to listen to while he’s high is music like his or one of his favorite DJs, the late and great CharlestheFirst.
