Mindchatter Embarks on Headlining Tour in Preparation for ‘DREAM SOUP’ Album Release [Interview + Ticket Giveaway]

Creative block is a very real thing that nearly all artists deal with, oftentimes because of their mental state. However, NYC-based artist Mindchatter doesn’t seem to run into this problem the same way; instead, he embraces it. Rather than allowing his inner dialogue to spiral, Mindchatter analyzes his stream of consciousness and pulls simple yet weighty expressions to blend into his genre-bending instrumentals.

“If I’m blocked, then I’ll write about what it’s like to be blocked, and then I’ll write about what it’s like to write about being blocked, etc. So I always have something to write about.”

Mindchatter

His name is just a glimpse into the messages you’ll hear in every one of his tracks, which “often address the human condition and speak to the chatter in our minds.” He blends his generally mellow electronic sound with indie, hip-hop, and singer-songwriter elements, creating an entirely new genre of his own. Mindchatter’s music truly scratches a mental itch with his contagious and hypnotic cadence.

“It’s called Mindchatter because the music sounds like my someone’s inner dialogue.”

Though the lyrics are simplistic in nature, the messages are strong. His lyrics will likely ring familiar to those who have dealt with a turbulent mind. Often, his words are those rational thoughts that peak through in the midst of a mental battle: “our minds play tricks on us, we’ll train them to be simple” (via “It’s Been You“). Words that you know are the truth but are hard to believe over everything else your mind is telling you.

Or conversely, those pesky repetitive thoughts that just don’t seem to go away: “blame game’s my middle name” (via “Blame Game“) … “love is a murderer, love is a murderer” (via “I Can Change“). Thoughts that may lead you into a puddle of self-pity, which he talks about in his recent release “Nothing On Me.”

“The song is about how there’s something alluring about feeling sad and sorry for yourself. It’s a reminder to pay attention to the world and not yourself.”

And also commonly both, such as in “It’s Ok (It’s Not Ok).” Other times, he makes outer observations, such as in “Scared to Go Home,” in which he describes the lonely energy he often feels throughout the club.

Thus, Mindchatter’s music can feel like a form of therapy in a way, allowing you to see through the jumbled chatter in your mind.

DREAM SOUP Album & Tour

The emerging artist has only been releasing music for a few years now but has quickly amassed a loyal following through his consistent releases and live performances. At the end of 2020, Mindchatter released his debut album Imaginary Audience, which contains hits like “It’s Been You” and “Days Go Slow.” In 2022, he’s already released four new tracks, including his most recent, “Math.” Now, he has embarked on his North American headlining tour while he prepares for the release of his next full-length project, DREAM SOUP, which drops this Friday.

Mindchatter x Respect My Region Interview

RMR: Tell us how the Mindchatter project came about? At what point in your creative journey did you decide it was time to start this artist project?

Mindchatter: I started making beats pretty obsessively at a young age, like 16 years old, but it wasn’t for another 6 or 7 years until Mindchatter came about. I used to do a lot of stream of consciousness writing to clear my head, and eventually I began to see the things I was writing about seep into the music. It’s called Mindchatter because the music sounds like my someone’s inner dialogue.

RMR: How do you feel living in New York City has influenced your sound and career?

M: New York City is somehow integral to my music. I get a lot of inspiration from bouncing around, taking the subway, going to restaurants and shows. Growing up in New York City you’re exposed to so many different cultures, I think it’s the reason my music is such a cocktail of genres.

RMR: Because your lyrics are so introspective and thoughtful, do you ever find that there are periods of your life that you’re unable to come up with new lyrics due to your mental state? If so, what do you find helps get you back in a creative state?

M: If I’m blocked, then I’ll write about what it’s like to be blocked, and then I’ll write about what it’s like to write about being blocked, etc. So I always have something to write about.

RMR: How was touring with Polo & Pan? What are some highs and lows of being on tour?

M: It was a great time being on the road with them and definitely a big learning experience. I got to see what goes into a big tour like that, and I’m lucky to have been able to play for such massive crowds. The only low was the traveling. I spent way too much time in airport security up and down the West Coast.

RMR: Who is your dream artist to open for?

M: I’m a big fan of Radiohead and LCD Soundsystem, it would be an honor to open for them.

RMR:  What is your favorite song to perform live and why?

M: There’s a song I wrote called “Answer Me” that always gets me moving. The way the lyrics line up with the bassline makes it the most fun song to sing live.

RMR: What are you most excited about when it comes to your headlining North American tour? Is there any specific city you’re most excited to perform at?

M: I’m most excited to play all the new music I’ve been writing. Every room in every city is a totally different experience, oftentimes the best shows end up being the most unexpected ones. That being said, I can’t wait to play Elsewhere in New York City.

RMR: Where did inspiration come from for your latest single, “Nothing On Me?”

M: The song is about how there’s something alluring about feeling sad and sorry for yourself. It’s a reminder to pay attention to the world and not yourself.

RMR: Who is behind all of your visuals?

M: I have a really talented artist and overall creative director named Simon Abranowizc on board with me, as well as an amazing 3D animator, named Zoe Ambinder.

RMR: What are you most excited about in 2022?

M: I’m most excited for April 8 when I get to share new music with everyone. DREAM SOUP!

RMR: If you could be reincarnated into any animal, what would it be and why?

M: My wiener dog Fauci is the happiest creature I know, so I would be one of those.
