Exclusive Interview with Minimal Effort Co-Founder Jordan Ziv
RMR: Out of all of the holidays, why did you guys choose Halloween and New Years Eve for your Minimal Effort events?
Jordan: They are the two best holidays to go out and party on, of course! When we started, there weren’t many shows in the city that brought multiple top tier acts and multiple stages to Los Angeles. You would always have to venture out to San Bernardino or other places an hour away for those massive-style events. We wanted to start something new directly in the city with a smaller, uniquely-curated vibe.
RMR: What inspired you to get into throwing events in the first place?
Jordan: After going to my first few raves in 2009, I became very interested in electronic music. I started going to shows often with a tight group of friends. The scene in LA was thriving and I learned that there was much more to electronic music than just the main stage. Of course, like a lot of people, I wanted to become a DJ. A friend of mine had the idea to throw a show. He brought me on to help curate the lineup, as well as to bring my knowledge of local promotion groups. Shortly after working on the first one, I met Cyril who’s my partner on Minimal Effort. Throwing shows became much more interesting (and time consuming) to me, so the DJ thing took a back seat. I soon became the full time operations guy behind Underrated and all of our brands.
RMR: What advice do you have for people looking to throw their first multi-artist music event?
Jordan: Programming has to make sense, whether it is each stage having their own vibe, or the timetable of your lineup/set times taking fans on a ride. Add your own personal touch to your lineup, there’s no need to book like the rest of the scene!
RMR: What advice do you have for DJs that are trying to perform at your events or others?
Jordan: We love working with local crews. We have seen some of these guys from their start, and love to give them the ability to curate a room or stage. This year, we are working with Hood Politics for Minimal Effort. They have been making a lot of noise in the city, and will be curating the basement stage. Be a curator with your friends and find a following, it works great in this city!
RMR: What are you guys dressing up as?!
Jordan: I personally end up making up a costume a few days before the show, usually including funky wig or hats. I let the people who I run into guess what I am dressed as, even though there is no right answer!
