New Music Friday: All the Latest Releases Are Here

New Music Friday: All the Latest Releases Are Here

We’re kicking off this August with some very exciting releases. This week’s new music Friday includes albums from YG, Travis Scott, Rezz, H.E.R. and Mac Miller. The variety of sounds will cater to almost everyone. I hope that people can venture out of their genre comfort zone and give a project below that they’d be hesitant about a chance.

Travis Scott – Astroworld

Travis Scott released a very astral and futuristic two-minute album trailer prior to the album release. The fans have been waiting for Astroworld for what seems like forever, and Travis Scott did not disappoint. The album is out of this world (pun intended). It features some of the biggest names in music including Tame Impala, The Weeknd, Pharrell, John Mayer, Thundercat, Frank Ocean, Drake, and more. Astroworld is a very cohesive masterpiece, and I hope everyone can give it a listen.

Rezz – Certain Kind of Magic

Rezz has been making a lot of noise in EDM and is a highly recognized female DJ. She’s the master of hypnotizing visuals and the leader of a water drinking cult. Certain Kind of Magic is the second album she’s put out. The overall witchcraft theme was inspired by a fan telling her that she seems to be casting a spell on her audience when performing. Rezz certainly does put a hex on the listeners as she captivates everyone through these enticing tracks. Additionally, you can read another of our writer’s in-depth review of the album here. Rezz will be going on tour, and you can catch her putting the audience in a trance live at the WaMu on September 29th!

H.E.R. – I Used to Know Her: The Prelude

H.E.R. has released a prelude to a new album, titled I Used to Know Her: The Prelude. This is a prelude EP for the upcoming album. H.E.R. got a lot of attention from her self-titled album and her incredible vocals and lyrics. This EP is so beautifully made, and I got goosebumps listening to the songs. Her lyrics continue to be intimate and vulnerable. In I Used to Know Her: The Prelude, H.E.R. spreads self-love while encouraging and supporting other women. The EP also features Bryson Tiller in a track full of heartbreak and regret. If you’re looking for music to vibe out to or feel better when you’re down, this is it.

YG – Stay Dangerous

Stay Dangerous is a highly anticipated summer album. It seemed weird starting the summer without music from YG to wild out to as he generally releases his music around that time. Luckily, YG was able to hold off the fans a little longer with the release of “Big Bank” as a single. In my opinion, Stay Dangerous as a whole was a little underwhelming, but there certainly were standout tracks. I’ll definitely be bumping this for the rest of the month regardless. YG is an icon of the West Coast and his music continues to shape the culture here.

Mac Miller – Swimming

Mac Miller just dropped his 5th album, Swimming. His prior single release of “Self Care” resonated with a lot of fans, and got everyone excited for Swimming. This album is more mellow and sad, as it focuses closely on Mac Miller. The tracks are honest and the listener can easily relate to the lyrics about being lost, sadness, finding yourself, and recovering. Despite having had a long music career, Mac Miller is still growing and constantly experiencing new things that reflect onto his music. Also, he has announced The Swimming Tour and will be coming through to Seattle on December 9th. Listen to the album and grab tickets to the show before it sells out!

However, that’s not it for August in terms of music. On August 17th, We can expect Harverd Dropout from Lil Pump, Sweetener from Ariana Grande, Queen from Nicki Minaj, and an album from Tyler Cordy as well. MihTy (a joint album from Ty Dolla Sign and Jeremih) is expected to be released on Aug 24. Basically, August is a good month for music with many excited releases!
