How Long Until The NFL Allows Players To Use Cannabis?

2017 has been one hell of a year for fans of the NFL.

The amount of hatred for Tom Brady is at an all time high. The Oakland Raiders made the playoffs for the first time in 15 years and were also one of the most explosive offenses in the league. More recently, it was also just agreed upon that the team would also move to Las Vegas for the 2020 season.

Another major surprise was Dallas Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones, reportedly raising the question of the NFL’s position on marijuana at an owners-only meeting in Arizona. Although this probably doesn’t seem like a huge deal at the moment, Jerry Jones helping to drive these conversations could help give athletes a choice to steer clear from opiates and other addictive treatments received throughout their playing careers. For the first time in my life, I’m thankful that I can always count on Jerry Jones and his Cowboys to keep things interesting.

‘Jones, per a source who heard the comments, wants the league to drop its prohibition on marijuana use. Jones was reminded that the issue falls under the umbrella of collective bargaining, which would require the players to make one or more concessions in exchange for significant changes to the marijuana prohibition.

Separately, the league office reiterated to PFT its position that any changes to the substance-abuse policy would occur within the confines of labor negotiations, and that the league is willing to listen to the medical community about any potential changes to the rules regarding marijuana.

Jones likewise urged an end to the practice of investigating off-field misconduct. The NFL became more proactive regarding these issues after the Ray Rice situation forced the league to no longer defer to the criminal justice system, which often imposes insufficient sanctions for clear acts of misbehavior.

A league spokesman told PFT that the NFL continues to maintain its commitment to pursuing investigations that are relevant and meaningful, and that the league office always looks to be efficient when conducting investigations.‘ – Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio

Change is in the air for the NFL and right now is an exciting time to be a fan. With multiple franchises switching states and players like Ezekial Elliott visiting pot shops when they visit legal weed states, how soon until other professionals in the NFL start to follow suit with progressive attitudes towards cannabis?
