Everyone loves it when your favorite artist finally makes a music video to a fire track after way too long of a wait. Well, that’s exactly what Past Life Kenny did with his track “Rompa,” a massive fan favorite from his catalog that he initially dropped 4 years ago. The afro-pop vibe has an infectious energy that completely takes over a crowd and is one that’s been highly deserving of its own video for some time now.
I first met Past Life Kenny at the final hip-hop show at the Bartlett a couple years ago. This song had even me jigging with the crowd and usually it takes me a minute to get into a new song. That’s when I knew he had something dope that could really stand out in an already diverse music scene.
“Now We in This Club and I’m Loving Your Swing”
Describing his sound, he has that afro-pop vibe I mentioned earlier. Past Life Kenny mashes up dancehall and hip-hop to create something truly unique to him. Other bangers of his like “Yep Yep Yep” and “Swang” exemplify this soulful-bop energy that Kenny brings. Don’t sleep though, Kenny has been known to come for heads too with tracks like “Serengeti” and “F For Effort.”
“Rompa” falls into that soulful-bop category that has really become a favorite of mine. The video, directed by Luke Barrett, puts me back in those Jay Sean “Down” days. With that early 2000s roller rink neon aesthetic, Kenny basically spits game in song form and gets the girl.
It’s hard to listen to “Rompa” and not want to move around a bit so check it out and let us know what you think. If you like it then peep some of his other hits and have the most lit dance playlist for your next party!
