HANiF Ignites Portland Rap Beef With Everyone (V. Dewayne, Mic Capes, Wynne)

After a slow few years in the local scene without shows and much networking, things are starting to heat up right when the winter hits. Portland rapper HANiF has been unloading clips at will at well, everyone. So far he’s served up songs for Wynne and Mic Capes with a few Instagram bars for V. Dewayne in this Portland rap beef.

We don’t like sharing local beef or perpetuating negativity in our scene. The RMR platform was created to uplift and provide a platform for the entire region. I’ll preface this with that. I’m a fan of every artist mentioned in the above paragraph. I lived in Portland in 2007-09 and back then, HANiF (then known as Luck-One,) was the biggest artist in Portland. He held that title for many years while also proclaiming himself as the King of The Northwest on numerous projects. A few came after the title, but we don’t think anyone held their own.

When we first started Respect My Region, Luck gave our brand more love than the vast majority of artists in the entire Pacific Northwest. He showed this love all while we were fresh in the game as a clothing brand, and he was one of the most established hip-hop artists in the region—we can never forget that love.

The next set of rappers that really made noise out of Portland after Luck/HANiF was Mic Capes, V. Dewayne, and Cassow. We’ve featured all of these artists, and I’m a real fan of all of their work. The past couple of years, we’ve seen Wynne make noise out of the Oregon area, and we’ve covered her music as well. Mic Capes and V. Dewayne have been some of my personal favorite PNW artists out the last few years. We cover a LOT of local music, but I actually listen to and enjoy both of their catalogs on a regular basis. The point being, the names involved in this digital “scuffle” are all top tier talent from the region.

How It Began

For now, this beef has seemingly been for the sport of rap. HANiF had felt disrespected by a few lines from other artists and if you know HANiF, you should know he will address any comments. That man will speak his mind and he will forever claim he is the best rapper in the PNW, while happily providing bars to back that claim. HANif said on IG Live himself, “this is rap. If you disrespect me and are a rapper, you will get attacked in this lane. This isn’t street beef, this is hip-hop. If you disrespect me, I will come at you.”

HANiF first released “Identity Fraud” and dissed Wynne.

While pushing the song on social media. HANiF started to mention how any rapper can get it and other rappers had mentioned the actions in Tweets and posts. HANiF immediately started to address via Instagram and loaded up a diss record for Mic Capes.

HANiF then took to Instagram Live on November 10th to discuss what was going on and V. Dewayne jumped in to tease a response record. Prince Hyph hopped in to express excitement around the local beef and how this type of competition helps sharpen everyone’s swords, as long as it stays on wax and not in the streets. That response is below.

On November 13th, Mic Capes responds to the initial shots from HANiF with a new diss record “In Loving Memory…”. The 3 and a half minute serving of bars spared very little punches. Although it was released a little “late”, Capes had been previously out of town in Arizona when the initial shots were fired his way.

On November 13th, Mic Capes responds to the initial shots from HANiF. HANif had recently promised to return a song aimed at both Mic and Vinnie once he heard Mic’s diss. That promise was good on within 12-24 hours and he released a response to both artists individually, which can be heard below.

HANiF “Wynne Dewayne” Freestyle (V. Dewayne Response)

On an Instagram live that was unintentionally moderated by PNW legend J. Pinder, the beef was seemingly ended. Mic Capes pressed HANiF about where the subject matter took a turn on the latest volley and expressed his strong displeasure with some personal marks on his family. HANiF had expressed some remarks about where Mic took his subject matter with his religoin. Pinder provided context as to why the OG’s may defend their title as well as providing perspective on how bringing family mattes into music isn’t the move.

We hope growth came from the conversation and the scene can be found tighter together from this. It’s been a spicy work in Portland with all of us in the Pacific Northwest looking in and hopefully, you found a new artist this week to put into your rotation.

What are your thoughts? Who’s gassing and who’s pen game is the sharpest in Portland? Let us know!
