As I was perched on a stool inside the Octopus Bar in Wallingford, a familiar name pops up in my email. Regularly spinning records at that very bar is DJ/producer Qreepz, so it’s an eerie coincidence that his new single with TeZATalks would show up in my inbox. I popped on my headphones to listen to the new track “My Own Thing” from the collaboration QreepzxTeZATalks.
Both of these artists bring their unique perspective to the track. Qreepz always soaks his beats in a dark aura where every thump and bump seems mischievous. TeZA adds her own mystery with a rough voice that speaks with a depth of life experience.
The world can sometimes make us feel like we don’t belong. In my darkest days, I find the Light. In my loneliest hours, I remember you and in a society where I’m taught to compare and be the same I fearlessly say, ” I’ll do my own thing.”
QreepzxTeZATalks – My Own Thing
I can hear many different cultural influences throughout the track. An Asian influence from what sounds like a Koto being sampled adds an intriguing flair for the listener’s ears. Meanwhile, TeZA has a flow that gives off essences of dancehall and the roots of some of hip-hop’s forefathers, Jamaica. A piece of pure poetry, you can read her lyrics and listen to the track on Bandcamp.
