From Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY, rapper and entrepreneur NEMS rises with his newest project, Rise of the Silverback. NEMS and Scram Jones worked together to create this project. With this being his fourth album, he follows up with many heavy hitters. You may know him from his viral “Bing Bong” videos on TikTok and other social media content like “Don’t Ever Disrespect Me.”
NEMS started on the scene with rap battles and hustling from the O’dwyer projects. To the underground hip-hop scene for years before he got recognition. In 2006, when he appeared on MTV2’s Flight Klub Cyphers, he started gaining public notoriety. From his first album release in 2010, he gained traction with his punchlines and hard-hitting bars. In 2023, he is back wiser and more potent with his social media and hip-hop presence.

From the intro, “Ascension,” down to the last song, “Missiles,” you hear NEMS through and through with his bars and FYL shoutouts. After the introduction, each piece blends effortlessly beside “Dirt,” which steers more into a trap and modern mix of new-age rap.
With his raunchy and humorous lyrical sound. The “Coney Island Mayor” still manages to keep his grimy essence. Truthfully, the use of Scram Jones’s production plays a massive role in this. The two-time Grammy-nominated producer, Jones delivers a booming bass and kickback through every song. You cannot dismiss this album’s overall hard work and clear intention.

In the album, NEMS and Scram Jones experiment with a sample of a gospel choir in a reality-facing track “Gorilla On Your Back.” This speaks on the struggles of addiction, drugs, and a cruel system that people face every day. On his song “Don’t Ever Disrespect Me,” which features Scram Jones Ghostface Killah, they hit audiences with attention-grabbing lyrics and some O.G. NYC tough instrumentals.
Truth be told, this album might not be for everyone, with songs like “Hold That” being one of the most explicit and raunchy tracks. However, Rise of The SilverBack is still worth a listen for new music hip-hop lovers.
With features from some of the likes of Ghostface Killah, Fat Joe, Sheek Louch, Tish Hyman, and Peedi Crakk. NEMS continues to keep NYC on the map for some of the realist hip-hop and reminds you to follow your passions and create authentic and honest pieces.
