RMR's Official 2018 Sasquatch Festival Recap

Sasquatch! Music Festival 2018 Recap

Thanks to RMR, I had the opportunity to photograph my first festival. Sasquatch! Music Festival took place at The Gorge Amphitheatre during Memorial weekend. This year, the lineup featured Tyler the Creator, Bon Iver, Anderson.Paak, Jai Wolf, and more. I’m very thankful to have spent the weekend at such a beautiful place with amazing weather. Here’s a recap of how the three-day festival went:

Day 1 (Friday):

The first day was full of culture shock and adjustment. Going to a festival is far less glamorous than Instagram posts live streams make it seem. However, that didn’t make my experience any less enjoyable. Friday was a  jam-packed day; there were lots of artists I wanted to photograph and I was busy running between stages to catch different performances. What’s very special to me was that Bon Iver was playing at main stage that night. I’ve waited for over five years to see Bon Iver live, and he’s been soundtracking my life. I wasn’t allowed to photograph him, but I was thankful enough for the opportunity to watch him perform. His set was easily the highlight of my weekend.

Day 2 (Saturday):

I woke up feeling slightly tired, but was energized as soon as I had arrived back on festival grounds. The acts that I had wanted to see and photograph were spread out throughout the day, so I had time in-between to edit photos. It made me strangely happy to see so many photographers editing in a room together. The standout sets for day two were Lizzo and Sango’s. They both brought a lot of energy and positive vibes through their music.

Another special moment was seeing Petit Biscuit perform. I’ve had my eye on him since the release of his debut album, Presence. He’s a very young artist, but had a great stage presence and is definitely an artist on the rise. I’m grateful to be able to watch him play at such an early stage in his career and potentially be a part of his journey and growth.

Day 3 (Sunday):

On Sunday, I felt the most tired I’ve been, and had an energy drink to get my morning started. The schedule wasn’t as packed as it was on Friday, but it certainly wasn’t as spaced out as it was on Saturday either. I saw the very talented Jacob Banks perform and as well as Noname, and became a fan of both of them after their mind-blowing sets. I also got to sit down and interview What So Not, who was busy making mixes for Triple J with an upcoming deadline. After that, I decided to take in the experience and make the most of it since it was the last day of the festival. I sat on the hill that overlooks the main stage as Ray Lamontagne performed while the sun was setting over The Gorge. After the sun dipped behind the mountains, I realized that I had survived and conquered a weekend in The Gorge and will be leaving without sunburns and tan lines.

Overall, the experience was incredible. I couldn’t have asked for anything better than being surrounded by such joyous people and phenomenal music.  The festival is so well organized and put together, and there were so many musical acts that pleasantly surprised me. The discovery of new music is just one of the many pros of the festival, along with its support for smaller and more local musicians. I definitely see myself going to Sasquatch! again in the future. If you can experience the festival for yourself, I would strongly recommend it! Keep an eye out for early bird tickets for next year.

More photos from the weekend can be seen on my Instagram! Thank you to Sasquatch! and Live Nation for putting it all together.
