Scream

Scary Movie Spotlight: Scream; The Slasher Classic Still Brings The Scares

Scream was released in 1996. It quickly became a classic and was followed up by 3 sequels and an MTV series that lasted 2 seasons, and is now to be rebooted for a third. None of these follow-ups could recapture the terrifying cleverness of the original Scream.

Scream opens with a young Drew Barrymore making stove-top popcorn. A phone call from a stranger soon turns into a horrifying game of horror movie trivia, the rules are simple: Answer right you live and answer wrong, ya dead. Barrymore didn’t last 15 minutes and was the second victim of the movie, this film was one of the first of its kind to kill off a top-billed cast member right away.

A horror movie that dissects the cliches and stereotypes of horror movies is what makes this film special. This isn’t done in hacky ways or with 4th wall breaks. The classic horror movie rules are used as a storytelling device for the killer.

Scream is 21 years old and the kills are as violent and horrific as ever. The lead up to the kill is just as scary as the kill itself, and the gore isn’t overkill it just enough to add to the realism which is why Scream holds up. Let’s not forget the legendary ghost face mask. Looking into the black elongated eyes before the shiny blade flashes across the screen is a scene that lives in horror infamy.

Scream is low-key funny. The writing is witty and the combination of Jamie Kennedy and Matthew Lillard provide great comedic timing throughout the entire movie, constantly referencing horror movie cliches.

Scream is a fantastic combination of scary, funny and self-awareness that makes it stand out from any other slasher franchise out there. It’s a must for any horror movie marathon.
