Meet Gary Campbell

Having moved here from Canada, Gary has been around the scene since 2012. Since then he has become a figure known for his passion and enthusiasm towards Seattle Hip Hop. He has reviewed over a hundred local albums on his Instagram account @heygaryc.

Over the past six months, Gary Campbell has been writing his love letter to the Seattle Hip Hop scene. This letter has taken the form of a fourteen track vinyl record. A compilation entitled Solar Power: New Sounds of Seattle Hip Hop.

Recently at a Vera Project show, I got the chance to speak to Gary about this project. I was curious to find out how he curated the track list. He told me that he truly admires every single artist on this album, it’s the music that speaks to him right now.

You can pick up the record at Spin Cycle at 321 E Broadway. Or do like I did, and pick it up off one of the featured artists out at their next show. I’ve seen most of these artists live, so it’s interesting to compare how they perform it to the recorded version.

Solar Power New Sounds in Seattle Hip-Hop

The cover art by Ari Glass is like a sun bursting into flames. The vinyl itself, a vibrant orange that exudes happiness through the whole listening experience. The back is filled with liner notes from Jonathan Zwickel, that beautifully state what this record is all about. It was executive produced by Gary Campbell and mastered by Adam Straney for Crane City Music.
