If you’re looking for solid underground hip-hop talent, don’t sleep on the scene in Portland, Oregon. Though this PNW city doesn’t necessarily have a huge imprint on hip-hop culture yet, the emerging local talent is changing that; crafting their own unique sounds that represent their hometown. One artist making waves and impacting the local culture is Portland native, Sour Deez. His latest move to impact the scene is his new motivational single, “Skywalker.”
Sour Deez grew up in Northeast Portland in a musically inclined family, so it only made sense that he got into crafting music at a very young age. It wasn’t until 2018 that the artist started releasing music on major platforms though, with his debut album Homegrown out in 2019.
After a busy start to 2021, Sour Deez is back with his third single of the year, “Skywalker,” released August 13th. This bouncy track, produced by Mac P, meshes trap and pop to create a catchy and inspirational song. “Skywalker,” proves to be a universal track due to its positive nature and pop-leaning but still hip-hop sound. The accompanying music video attaches a perfectly matching aesthetic to the cheerful track.

Sour Deez helps to craft Portland’s hip-hop identity
With no real signature local hip-hop sound to take inspiration from, Sour Deez is crafting his own. He tells us that one of his goals it to create a hip-hop identity for the NW. He knows it won’t be a walk in the park, stating, “Until you reach a certain point in your career you have to grind and gain credibility in order to get this city’s support. Portland made me grind harder… make moves that made me stand out amongst other artist in my region.”
Living in Portland has made me versatile. I feel it’s important to be able to cater to more than one audience when you’re an artist. Portland made me an artist, not just a rapper.

What’s next for Sour Deez
Sour Deez tells us, “who knows what’s next?” He lets us know that he’s going to keep up with his grind, delivering more dope music and visuals. SDZ merch will also be on its way soon. Whatever comes next, as long as its from Portland rapper Sour Deez we know it will be solid.
