Spotify announced that they will be removing R.Kelly, XXXTENTACION and other artists from their generated playlists under their new hate content & hateful conduct policy.

What does this mean for the industry? Cases like this have been ongoing in the battle for fame and misfortune.

Should R-Kelly and XXXTENTACION Be Punished Under New Hateful Conduct Policy?

With women’s advocacy groups calling to halt his music from the airwaves due to decades of accusations of sexual misconduct and assault. R.Kelly wouldn’t be the last person. Many artists like Nelly, Eminem and Ted Nugent have caught fire as well.

“We don’t censor content because of an artist’s or creator’s behaviour, but we want our editorial decisions – what we choose to program – to reflect our values,” – Spotify

Moreover, he is also accused of running a sex cult Ben Zand, a reporter from the United Kingdom did a thorough investigation on R.Kelly. He published a documentary called “The Dark World Of R Kelly? Sex, Girls & Videotapes,” in which he interviews people close to Kelly.

His behavior is likely just the tip of the iceberg. Being one of the most famous R&B singers in the world, he has done some of the best songs, painting himself as a sex icon. With people coming out and accusing him, he definitely is going to be toning down his performances until the fire subsides.

I believe there should be more accountability for the artists rather than having corporate interest dictating who gets promoted. Lastly, it creates a huge bias and censoring an artist to reflect the company values crosses a fine line. Do you think Spotify right in removing them from curated playlists?
