A seesaw and/or teeter-totter has been installed on a section of the southern border wall. Like most interactive art, the meaning here is both obvious and subtle. The installation itself is kind of funny without any of the context available from today’s political climate. However, the nature of everything going on in this country clearly adds a provocative element.
This piece of art seems like a jab at President Trump‘s pursuit of erecting a wall on our southern border. Turns out the installation was first imagined by Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello over ten years ago. That means Trump was not even in office when it’s creators, a pair of California professors, began working on it. Giving the artwork more societal significance than originally intended.
I think it is a brilliant piece of art. This is because observer has a multitude of interpretations available to them depending on their perspective. For example, one could easily view it in a politicized or partisan way. Or perhaps as they envisioned it, you would see they were attempting to highlight how action on one side of the border directly affects those on the other.
More to that point, if we work together we can have quite a bit of fun. However, if we don’t somebody can really get hurt. This means that at the end of the day, without consideration of others, no one gets or wants to play anymore. Ultimately it is a pretty thoughtful piece of art regardless of your position on the issues it points to. For the official story as originally reported go here.
